For our last ride of the season, we biked to Corona Park, riding down the East River Esplanade and across the Queensboro Bridge. We stopped on the other side of the Queensboro Bridge to look for a geocache without success. At our next stop, Alexis found a cleverly hidden geocache on the intersection of 43rd Ave and 46th St. Once we were inside the park, we ate lunch by another geocache that Alexis found! After lunch, we biked to the Unisphere, which was unfortunately under renovation. Adriana explained the word of the day, accessibility, and mentioned specific examples in New York City that enable or limit accessibility; for instance, the steep stairs in front of the school not only make it harder for us to bring our bikes outside or inside but also prevent the disabled from entering or exiting the school that way. Ori told us about the history of the park and its features:
Did you know the Unisphere was built for the 1964 Worlds Fair, had a cameo in Men in Black, and is the largest replica of Earth on Earth?
We took a quick water break and had a water gun fight before biking to the lake, where Alberto drew a water sample. Afterwards, we kept biking to a skate park, riding up and down the ramps. We left the park and rode to The Lemon Ice King of Corona! Thank you Cappy for the refreshing Italian ices! And congrats to Carlos for finding another geocache! It was time to bike back to school, so we hit the streets, resting at John Vincent Daniels Jr. Square before biking back over the Queensboro. Back at school, we tested our water sample before calling it a day.
What a great way to end a great season! It’s been a wild ride through all five boroughs, adding up to over 200 miles of biking! This is your 2018 interns, Ori and Lauren, signing off!
